The failure of the party to operate an online strategy \u201cin a real way that exhibits competence\u201d, Ocasio-Cortez told the Times, made it hypocritical for the party to advance criticism of progressive messaging.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I lost my election, and I went out and I said: \u2018This is moderates\u2019 fault. This is because you didn\u2019t let us have a floor vote on Medicare for all.\u2019 And they opened the hood on my campaign, and they found that I only spent $5,000 on TV ads the week before the election?\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said. \u201cThey would laugh. And that\u2019s what they look like right now trying to blame the Movement for Black Lives for their loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really hard for us to turn out nonvoters when they feel like nothing changes for them. When they feel like people don\u2019t see them, or even acknowledge their turnout,\u201d Ocasio-Cortez said.<\/p>\n

The Ocasio-Cortez interview is full of frank impressions freely shared. Asked what her \u201cmacro takeaway\u201d was from the election, she said: \u201cWell, I think the central one is that we aren\u2019t in a freefall to hell anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

While there were concerns about the reliability of exit polls this year with so much voting happening over mail and the failure of polls generally, Trump appeared to have won white voters in 2020 by about as much as he did in 2016 \u2013 15 points.<\/p>\n

The coming period of presidential transition and the Biden administration\u2019s early days will be crucial to determining whether the Democratic party will incorporate in a permanent way its grassroots progressive engine \u2013 or veer off down a path toward defeat, Ocasio-Cortez said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I am normally not at all a betting man, however it would seem that a wager on the US Democratic Party’s approach to progressives during the next months would be pretty easy money.<\/p>\n

Something which I found interesting was the Guardian’s editing of the New York Times AOC interview<\/a>. The conflation of progressive politics and online advertising would seem to do AOC a disservice and I went to the Times to read additional parts of the exchange, only to find she’s actually more coherent in the Guardian.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
