Just as a scientific mortality study was needed to reveal that\u00a0about 3,000 people died\u00a0as a result of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico,\u00a0only comprehensive mortality studies can produce reliable estimates of the true scale of the slaughter in America\u2019s endless wars. Such studies are sorely needed\u00a0for Afghanistan, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Pakistan.<\/p>\n

Absent such studies, the BBC\u2019s August survey in Afghanistan and ACLED\u2019s reports on Yemen are\u00a0among\u00a0the most reliable reports available, but they should be referenced or cited with the clear understanding that what they report are confirmed minimum numbers of people killed.\u00a0 The question they leave unanswered is: what fraction of the true numbers of people killed do these reports represent?<\/p>\n

The considerable experience of epidemiologists in war zones around the world, including in Iraq, suggests approximate answers to that question, as I have explained in\u00a0my reporting\u00a0on these questions over the\u00a0past fifteen years.\u00a0This has led me to conclude that\u00a0the\u00a0true death toll in America\u2019s post-9\/11 wars\u00a0is not\u00a0in the tens of thousands, nor even in the hundreds of thousands, but\u00a0in the millions<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
