DeSantis signed into law House Bill 395, designating 7 November as Victims of Communism Day.

Florida is one of a handful of states to adopt the designation, but is believed to be the first to mandate school instruction on that day.

The instruction will begin in the 2023-2024 school year, DeSantis said, and will require teaching about Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro, as well as “poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech” endured under their leaderships in the Soviet Union, China and Cuba respectively.

Der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj sieht eine große Symbolkraft in den Reisen internationaler Prominenz in sein Land zum Jahrestag des Welt­kriegs­endes in Europa. „Der heutige Tag in der Ukraine hat gezeigt, dass wir bereits ein vollwertiger Teil der freien Welt und eines vereinten Europas sind“, betonte Selenskyj in seiner täglichen Videoansprache am Sonntag­abend. „Dies ist ein offensichtlicher Kontrast zu Moskaus Einsamkeit in Bösem und Hass, die morgen jeder sehen wird“, sagte er in Anspielung auf die Feierlichkeiten in der russischen Hauptstadt am Montag.

Am Sonntag hatten unter anderen US-Präsidenten­gattin Jill Biden, Bundestags­präsidentin Bärbel Bas, der kanadische Regierungs­chef Justin Trudeau und die U2-Musiker Bono und The Edge die Ukraine besucht. Selenskyj sprach auch in einer Konferenz­schalte mit den Regierungschefs der G7-Industrie­nationen. Alle G7-Staaten verpflichteten sich, die Einfuhr von russischem Öl auslaufen zu lassen oder zu verbieten. Ein US-Regierungsvertreter kündigte ein Verbot für unternehmerische Dienstleistungen für Firmen oder Personen in Russland an.

It is difficult for me to determine who displays the most enthusiasm in this clip. I found it curious as well that the BBC found it necessary to give an explicit synopsis of what was depicted. This seems increasingly the form „news“ takes: the viewer is fed pablum and then told what they just consumed, how it tasted, and what they should think and remember about it.

Two stories surfaced in as many days in the American press this week, citing unnamed officials as saying that US intelligence was instrumental in the targeting of Russian generals on the battlefield and in the sinking of the Moskva flagship cruiser on the Black Sea.

In both cases, the US was claiming a hand in historic humiliations for Moscow and for Vladimir Putin, triggering warnings of unintended consequences.

Paul Pillar, a former senior CIA official, said: “My personal view is it’s unwise. I am surprised at the extent of official confirmation of the role of US intelligence in the sinking into Moscow, and even more so the killing of the generals.

“The big concern is that this sort of public confirmation of this extensive US role in the setbacks dealt to the Russians may provoke Putin into escalation in a way that he might not otherwise feel it necessary to escalate.”

Robert Scheer:

So they were early participants in internet journalism; they have done great work for, you know, what are we talking now, decades. And suddenly they’re under attack because they dared disagree with the narrative, or some of the official narrative in the reporting about the Ukraine and Russia and so forth. One would think that democracy and a free press thrived on that kind of constructive, informed disagreement.

But I must say, as an old-time journalist, I have never experienced this kind of attack on critical thinking in the media and the political discourse, even under Joe McCarthy. Yes, I was alive then, and even doing some scribbling as a teenager. It’s worse than it was during the Vietnam War; you can take my word for that.

I, Robert Scheer, actually looking at the record, being in, I think, in objective journalism, would say that this whole situation in Ukraine was very much engineered and abetted by the U.S. deciding that it knew who the best people were to run the Ukraine, and mobilizing people in an election in a surreptitious way, and meddling in their politics—yes. I think the record would show that.

McCarthyism was child’s play compared to this. They’ve got—because at least in McCarthyism you had the New York Times, you had establishment voices declaiming against this guy. That’s not the case now. It’s coming from the Democrats.

This is not McCarthyism. McCarthy was a drunken senator, and not all that photogenic, who was running into very stiff opposition because he was taking on people in the Eisenhower administra­tion. You now have this whirlwind of establish­ment news organizations, politicians and so forth, calling for the head of anyone who dares challenge their narrative. Free press be damned. And that is a really scary moment.
